Psychosocial Hazards: What Are They? How Do We Assess Them?
Establishing the hazard/risk inventory is a critical component under occupational health and safety management system requirements such as CSA Z1000
and OHSAS 18001. OHS practitioners have developed
considerable comfort and skill when conducting risk
assessments for physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic
and mechanical hazards. But what about mental hazards?
Organizational culture, policy and programs need to be
assessed for potential mental injury or harm in a similar
way to the approach applied to potential physical injury.
Practical tools and techniques to support the assessment
process will be discussed.
Generation Y and How They Will Change Our Workplaces
Generation Y’s, also known as Millennials – born
between 1980 and 1995 and 80 million strong – are
entering the workplace with starkly different attitudes
and expectations than other generations. So beware
all bosses! A new breed of worker is about to attack
everything you hold sacred including health and safety.
In fact, Generation Y and workplace safety may be a total
mismatch. Generation Y’s may tend to disregard work
safety completely especially if they are told by someone
who is older than them. Come prepared to learn: how
Generation Y is different than other generations; their
attitudes; how to recruit, engage, retain and communicate
successfully with this next generation of young workers.
