Who is a Volunteer? Any individual who is personally committed
to the vision of IAPA and who is performing at least one of
the following volunteer functions.
Network
Meet with other health and safety professionals. Share your successes, concerns and best practices. Find out how a healthier workplace can have a positive influence on an organization’s bottom line. Stay current on legislation and find solutions to health and safety issues. Become involved in our Chapter Volunteer program and get connected to your local Networking and Knowledge Exchange Chapter.
Scope of Programming
Networking and knowledge exchange is intended to:
- Enhance health and safety knowledge;
- Allow sharing of best practices; and
- Promote excellence in health and safety practices among
member and non-member firms.
Topics are planned annually in line with IAPA strategic
direction and complement existing IAPA information, products
and services. Chapters are encouraged to use environmental
scans and other member surveys to identify local areas of
interest and to use members as facilitators. The focus of
Networking and Knowledge
Exchange is intended to be on learning through facilitated
discussion or other group work.
Volunteer Opportunities
Become involved with your Chapter by:
- Helping conduct an environmental scan or email survey
of Chapter members
- Coordinating a Networking and Knowledge Exchange
- Facilitating and Hosting and/or Presenting at a Networking
and Knowledge Exchange
- Sourcing speakers
- Recruiting attendees (guests)
- Recruiting Chapter volunteers
- Serving in a Chapter leadership role as a Chair/Vice Chair

Conferences
and Special Events
Roll up your sleeves and become a conference volunteer and help plan, develop and evaluate educational solutions across Ontario, like conferences and community events.
Conference Volunteer: National Conference
Participate in the planning and/or in support activities during
IAPA’s annual national conference, Health & Safety Canada,including introducing concurrent session speakers and staffing
information, registration and other booths.

Volunteer: Regional Conferences
Assist in planning, developing and/or evaluating educational
programs for regional conference attendees. There are also
the opportunities to present as a subject matter expert on
a particular health and safety topic and to serve as a Chair
for a particular regional
conference.
Senior
Volunteers
Senior volunteers are those volunteers who have been continuously
active with IAPA and upon retirement from industry wish to continue
their volunteer work with the organization or they are new volunteers
who have retired from their work and now have time to support
IAPA’s outreach. For more information on the roles that

Industry Sector Specialist (ISS).

Council
The Volunteer Council has a number of provincial committees
involved in various aspects of volunteering at IAPA including
Volunteer Recruitment and Recognition, Volunteer System Performance,
Program and Planning, and Council Recruitment.
Volunteer Council Member
Providing vision to the overall volunteer framework, this
volunteer position is elected for a term of three years and
meets regularly throughout the year. For more information,

Leadership
There are opportunities for IAPA’s volunteers to participate
in leadership roles. These include (click on the item of interest

Youth Initiatives
Inspire youth! Help promote on-the-job health and safety awareness as a youth outreach volunteer. Utilize your presentation and facilitation skills as a YWAP (Young Worker Awareness Program) facilitator. Your efforts will help reach over 25,000 high school students each year.
You could also help with our LINK
(Learning Innovative New Knowledge) program which engages high school
students to increase their health and safety awareness and
shows them how to protect themselves from injury, harm or
death at work.
Young Worker Awareness Program
The Young Worker Awareness Program (YWAP) gives students crucial information to ensure their health and safety on the job, designed to raise awareness, deliver knowledge, and inform young workers of their rights. Since 1995 almost 400,000 students have taken part in this program.
Aug 25, 2009: We are currently seeking corporate industry individuals with facilitation skills who can deliver the Young Worker Awareness Program to high school students. Vacancies currently exist in Peterborough, Lindsay Brantford, Simcoe and Cambridge.
Master Trainer
This opportunity is open to experienced YWAP Facilitators
who have expressed an interest in a leadership role and who
are prepared to provide training to prospective facilitators
on behalf of IAPA in their local community. For more information, contact your CVCS/ISS.
YWAP Facilitator
Relying on excellent facilitation skills, particularly with
a youth audience, the LINK volunteer presents a modified version
of the YWAP
program in a local high school(s) to participating classrooms including offering
support to the teacher and students.
Classroom Resource
Drawing on background knowledge of the Occupational Health
and Safety Act and other health and safety information, the
volunteer acts as a resource for the teacher in a local participating
classroom, including fielding questions and providing advice
regarding health and safety.
LINK Program
LINK Youth Health and Safety Forum is a fast-paced, energetic, peer-delivered information program, including interactive modules. Using state-of-the-art, multimedia technology, the program, engages their interest and teaches them the importance of health and safety in an entertaining, interactive manner.
Judge
Using background knowledge of the Occupational Health and
Safety Act and excellent listening skills, the volunteer (along
with other volunteers) attends presentations at local schools
and evaluates each presentation using a specific process.
Sponsorship/Fundraiser
With prior experience in fundraising, the volunteer works
to obtain donations of both financial support through the
Adopt-a-Student campaign and for local support services required
by the program such as bussing and hotel accommodations for
student participants.
Youth Health & Safety Forum Volunteer
The schools that have placed in the regional competitions
have the opportunity to perform at IAPA’s national conference,
Health
& Safety Canada. As part of a conference team, the
Forum volunteer works with the participating schools to ensure
that the performances maintain their high quality.
